Alles draait om gunfactor

Het is weer zover, de jaarlijkse discussie over de opzet van het Sportgala. Ik denk dat slechts weinig atleten en coaches achter de huidige formule van de verkiezing van de Sportman- en Sportvrouw van het Jaar staan. Zolang de stemming onder alle A-sporters in de zaal (mede)bepalend is, blijft het een populariteitsprijs, die voor een groot deel gebaseerd is op de gunfactor.

Zelf ben ik ook weer genomineerd, maar ik ga er niet vanuit dat ik de prijs zal winnen, dus daar hoef ik het hier niet over te hebben. Ik ben in mijn carrière eenmaal Sportman van het Jaar geweest, in 2007 alweer. Ik was er toen enorm mee verguld. Het was de eerste keer dat ik zoiets meemaakte. Nu zou ik er waarschijnlijk iets anders tegenaan kijken.

Bij het stemgedrag van sporters gaat het niet louter om de weging van prestaties, maar veel meer en veel te vaak om persoonlijke voorkeuren. Voor mijn gevoel komen voetballers en schaatsers er om die reden vaak bekaaid af. Waarom? Omdat wij het in de ogen van veel sporters te goed hebben, zowel qua aandacht als qua financiële beloning. Terwijl dat laatste in het schaatsen maar voor een select groepje geldt.

Daarnaast leeft de gedachte dat schaatsers te succesvol zijn. En dat is weer typisch Nederlands. Het doet me denken aan de discussie die tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Sotsji oplaaide of Nederland niet te dominant was. Doen we het een keer supergoed op het hoogst denkbare platform, is het weer niet goed. Ik heb sterk het idee dat men in andere landen heel anders met dergelijke successen omgaat. Ik heb het daar deze week nog over gehad met Havard Bökko, die momenteel met onze ploeg mee op trainingskamp is in Collalbo. In Noorwegen koestert men juist de grote successen van hun crosscountryskiërs, daar klaagt niemand.

Bij de vrouwen is Ireen Wüst genomineerd als Sportvrouw van het Jaar. Ik wil niets ten nadele zeggen van de andere genomineerden, maar ik zou het een enorme aanfluiting vinden, of schandalig eigenlijk, als zij geen Sportvrouw van het Jaar zou worden. Ze loopt nog krom van alle medailles die ze in Sotsji kreeg omgehangen.

Maar bij sportverkiezingen is niets zeker. Wat dat betreft zegt het veel over de Nederlandse sportcultuur dat niet Niki Terpstra als winnaar van Parijs-Roubaix, maar Tom Dumoulin werd uitgeroepen tot wielrenner van het jaar. Terpstra is misschien geen lieverdje en niet bij iedereen in het wielrennen even populair. Maar hij wint potverdorie wel. En daar gaat het volgens mij om in topsport. Wat mij betreft had hij ook genomineerd mogen zijn voor Sportman van het Jaar. Er zijn toch al zoveel genomineerden. Dan had hij er ook nog wel bij gekund.

Resteert de vraag of het Sportgala nog een meerwaarde heeft? Ik zou het eerlijk gezegd niet kunnen verzinnen. Anders gezegd, ik zal er geen seconde minder van slapen als we met deze verkiezing zouden stoppen.
